Potsdam

Potsdam is always worth a trip - and the Congress Hotel Potsdam on Lake Templin too. The hotel is situated at the airship port in the western part of Potsdam, in the attractive forest and lake scenery of the “Pirschheide” and directly on the shores of Lake Templin. It is only 10 minutes to the centre of the Brandenburg capital and about half an hour to Berlin. Potsdam is like an island in the middle of the forested Havel Lake District and a symbol of a cultured landscape. The town offers numerous contrasts to its visitors. Potsdam’s attractive surroundings close to the metropolis of Berlin are best discovered on a boat trip down the Havel River. Picturesque views of splendid castles and park grounds offer a glimpse of why noblemen, kings, and emperors once chose Potsdam as their residence. Here, right before the gates of Berlin, one can find absolute peace, enjoy nature along the cycle track and footpath around the lake, take a walk down the paths of history and marvel at the traces left behind or take a discovery trip to experience the vibrant metropolis Berlin.

Potsdam played an important role in the early years of aviation. Not far from the city centre, there is a location on which German history was written. In 1910, airship inventor Count Zeppelin received an area of 25 hectares adjacent to Lake Templin from the town of Potsdam to establish an airship port. On 9th September 1911 the „Schwaben" landed here - the first airship arriving from Lake Constance. In 1912 the biggest airship hangar of Germany was situated here. Airships like „Graf Zeppelin", „Viktoria Luise" and „Nordstern" were at home here. From 1914 war airships were built and in 1917 the production of these giants of the skies was stopped. From 1920 only the „Shedhalle” remained.

„Am Luftschiffhafen“ – even today this address is still unique: here, on this historical location where once Count Zeppelin built his airships, we say „welcome aboard our airships“. Picturesquely situated, with own waterfront dock, the three futuristic hotel buildings „Viktoria Luise”, „Graf Zeppelin” and „Nordstern” seem to float freely on the spacious area. At this historical location the financial institute - „Ostdeutscher Sparkassenverband” integrated the listed buildings of the former production plant of the „Zeppelinwerft“ in an impressive manner into a modern hotel of the highest standards.

The historical „Shedhalle” - converted into a conference centre – has now become a connecting element between tradition and modern age. Besides, elements from the airship construction were cleverly incorporated into the modern hotel, so that in some places one almost feels like inside a zeppelin.
