Status seminar
Chemical Biology in Germany:
Meeting Europe
5.-6. Dezember 2005
DECHEMA-Haus,
Frankfurt am Main/Germany

Perturbations of suitable model systems and molecular analysis of the consequences is the paradigm for studying complex biological phenomena. Complementary to systematic DNA mutagenesis and RNA interference studies, chemical biology utilizes low molecular weight natural and synthetic compounds to interfere directly with protein function. The interdisciplinary chemical biology approach joins chemists, engineers, informaticians and biologists and creates numerous opportunities for innovation and commerce. Chemical Biology is opening new paths for research in the post genome era and represents the most direct translation into benefits for basic science and for health of the public and environment.

In December 2004 more than 160 organic chemists, molecular biologists and bioinformaticians gathered at the first status seminar ?Chemical Biology in Germany? to discuss the perspectives and chances of the field. Since then a lot has happened: The relevant scientific organisations DECHEMA, DPhG, GBM and GDCh founded a common working section in chemical biology. Leading German laboratories and institutes joined their forces to form the ChemBioNet (www.chembionet.org), a network providing capacities and experience for its academic partners.

The upcoming second status seminar will again present current research reports from German laboratories but, this year, also will take a look at the ongoing chemical biology initiatives and projects in other European countries. Internationally renowned speakers accepted the invitation to report of the situation of the field in their countries thus giving a comprehensive overview of the European scene. We will take this opportunity to discuss on potential opportunities for European networking.
